Aledo ISD Education Foundation directors presented Aledo ISD trustees with a check for $90,585 last week, surrendering funds that will enable 38 educational enrichment projects submitted by teachers on all eight regular campuses.
“These directors have worked diligently over the last six months to build a non-profit organization, to build a brand, increase our marketing and solicit donations,” Board president Shawn Callaway said, noting the new organization’s May 31 incorporation.
“Throughout the fall, with the assistance of the administrative staff — including Earl Husfeld, Denise Dugger, Kathy Allen and especially Lynn McKinney and Donna Roe — teachers have submitted grant requests, the first of many initiatives the foundation will undertake over the next several years.”
Donations secured from the community will fund 38 innovative teaching grants and opportunities, Callaway said, with each campus receiving from one to eight grants. Funding per campus ranges from about $4,300 to about $24,000. The winning teachers will be announced in January 2014.
“I’m in awe of the work that you have done, and the money you have raised,” School Board President Jay Stringer said. “I’m generally an optimistic person, but never in my wildest imagination when this foundation was first set up did I envision you all raising over $90,000 in the first year. So, the board’s hats are off to every one of you all.”
Trustee Hoyt Harris, one of 23 directors, said the foundation is a ongoing process.
“It’s not a three-week window that we’re out trying to raise money,” he said. “It’s a process year round that we’re telling our story about what we’re doing for the kids.
“If you can kind of get the mind set of we’re not raising money, we’re telling our story, it becomes more natural going around the community identifying prospective donors.”
Recognizing and appreciating those donors is the next step, Harris said.
