New downtown traffic flow to begin in January for Aledo

Aledo Trail will soon begin to function as a couplet of north and southbound roads, according to the Aledo Trail update recently completed by engineering firm Freese and Nichols and posted on the City of Aledo’s website.

City Administrator Ken Pfeifer said Monday that city officials are waiting to hear from the project’s contractor, McMahon Construction, before announcing a date for rerouting the traffic, now projected to take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on a day in mid to late January.

Electronic message boards will post the exact date two weeks before the traffic switch.

As the first phase of construction ends — including a new railroad crossing at the new southbound leg of the couplet — the old railroad crossing at Chestnut Street will be closed.

As the new one-way southbound leg of Aledo Trail opens and the existing FM 1187 changes from two-way traffic to one-way northbound, the new westbound turnaround will open, rerouting all northbound traffic bound for Old Annetta Road around the couplet.

During this second phase of construction, Elm Street and North Front Street will alternately provide access from FM Road 1187 to the downtown area, with Elm Street open first — while North Front Street is closed for improvements — and North Front Street reopened when Elm Street is closed for improvements.

South Front Street will also be closed at FM 1187 but will remain accessible through Crockett Street.

All driveways are to have access to public right-of-way during the construction process, according to the update, with contractors and engineers coordinating access with adjacent property and business owners while new driveways are being constructed.

According to the contractor’s schedule, the second phase of construction will be finished in three months, with project completion by May.
