Annetta addresses roads, boundaries

ANNETTA —

By CHRISTIN COYNE

During Thursday night’s council meeting, Annetta mayor pro-tem Larry Wood presented the road maintenance plan for the fiscal year as well as a recommendation the town adopt a road maintenance policy similar to the county’s.

The county is giving the town $13,500 for road repairs that the county and Wood have agreed to, Wood said.

“On the county money, almost the entire road of Highland is getting repaired because the county thinks that evidently that’s a thoroughfare for them,” Wood said. “It’s in bad shape. They are going to fix the whole thing and they are going to fix the S-curve at the top of Lakeview ... at the top of the hill, it goes from Live Oak to Royal Oak.”

Another agreement would rebuild the intersection of Deer Creek Drive and Tanglewood, the intersection of Deer Creek/Plantation and Old Annetta Drive and 440 square yards of hot mix overlay on Deer Creek Drive, according to Wood.

“This is where I’m using the Annetta city budget of $15,000 - I’m using $13,500 of it,” Wood said. “And I’m asking the mayor to sign off on that, as well.”

“All of that is to be done within the next couple months,” Wood said.

He was given an estimate by the county of about $101,000 for a mile of hot mix overlay on Old Annetta Road if the city pays all the labor, Wood said.

“The county rebuilds 10 percent of their roads every year and they do maintenance on 10 percent of their roads every year,” Wood said. “So some roads get maintenance, some roads get rebuilt but they try and redo the road every 10 years. He [Precinct 4’s foreman Steve Dugan] is encouraging, the reason this came up is, he said, ‘You guys really need to adopt this policy, as well.’ Obviously at a $101,000 per mile, it’s a very expensive policy. I’m not saying we shouldn’t adopt it. I’m just saying it’s a very costly program.”
