AdvoCats Run, Walk or Crawl April 27

Weatherford Democrat

— Staff Reports

The Aledo Children’s AdvoCats, a women’s organization that strives to enrich the lives of area children in need, is ready to welcome some 700 race participants to Bearcat Stadium Saturday, April 27, for its annual fundraiser, the Run, Walk or Crawl for Our Kids Kiddie K Fun Run and 5K.

The route will begin at Bearcat Stadium, continue around the Aledo High School Campus and end back at Bearcat Stadium. After-race celebrations, as well as the Finish Line Festival and awards ceremony, will be held inside the stadium. Parking is provided.

The AdvoCats look forward to the 2nd Annual Finish Line Festival, where race participants can hear live music, sample food from area restaurants and food vendors and shop for home goods, clothing and services from area retailers.

And for the second year, the AdvoCats will offer a Special Needs prize category. Each participant competing in the 1K Fun Run or the 5K race will be allowed one race companion, who will be admitted free but is not eligible to qualify.

“This race started as a community event that would not only serve as a fundraiser to the Aledo Children’s AdvoCats mission, but also as a venue for families to come together in a healthy environment,” said Jennifer Collins, race sponsorship chairwoman.

“The vision was for people of all ages to be able to participate, hence the name ‘Run, Walk, or Crawl,’” she said. “As the race has aged, we have gained participation from outside our community as well. Many experienced runners appreciate the closed course (traffic), but love the wide open visual that the high school grounds provide.”

Last year, the AdvoCats donated more than $35,000 to more than 350 children for medical expenses, dental care, school supplies, counseling, food and shelter. The AdvoCats are not only excited and optimistic about this year’s fundraising and community support, but also about their new race chairwoman, Tracy Stallings Reed.

“I am so honored to be a part of such a wonderful group of ladies and their unwavering support of the children in Aledo ISD,” Reed said. “While this is my first year to chair the Aledo AdvoCats ‘Run, Walk, or Crawl,’ this certainly isn’t my first event with them.

“I have been involved with the golf tournament and the Angel Project for several years. The run is by far the largest fundraiser for the AdvoCats, and each year the event has grown immensely with race participants and sponsors. All monies raised go back to the children of Aledo ISD and impact so many lives. Staci Smith, last year’s race chairwoman, did an amazing job, and I know this year’s committee will only add to the momentum from last year.”

Racing With a Purpose

Proceeds from Run, Walk or Crawl for Our Kids are used to help fulfill the unmet needs of children and families in the community, including The Children’s Fund, The Angel Project, The Clothes Closet, high school scholarships, Shattered Dreams, and Teen Court as well as others.

Every $200 raised can fund one child’s doctor visit and prescription, school supplies for four children, weekly readers for 30 children or art/choir supplies for eight children.

Every $500 can fund dental care for one child, calculators for five high school children, utility assistance for one child or counseling for two.

Every $1,000 can supply one child with emergency/minor dental care, 10 children with Aledo summer camps, 20 children with school supplies or 7 children with food cards.
