Homecoming to delay traffic switch

— Staff Reports

TxDOT and McMahon Construction will delay the scheduled traffic switch on FM Road 1187 from Wednesday to 8 p.m. Monday, Oct. 7, due to Aledo High School’s homecoming game Oct. 4th.

The Oct. 7th traffic switch will move all FM 1187 traffic onto the newly built east side of FM 1187 to allow construction crews to build the new FM 1187 southbound lanes.

This plan is expected to create some traffic backups in the area of the Bailey Ranch Road intersection.

Work on the southbound lanes will result in the closing of access to Bankhead Highway off of FM Road 1187. All traffic wishing to turn onto Bankhead Highway will be detoured to Bailey Ranch Road and then onto Champion’s Drive, which will allow for access to Bankhead Highway.

Southbound traffic on FM 1187 wishing to turn right onto Bailey Ranch Road will be able to do so, but without a designated right turn lane at the FM 1187 and Bailey Ranch Road intersection. Northbound traffic on FM 1187 will have a dedicated left turn lane onto Bailey Ranch Road.

In addition, during the construction of the southbound lanes of FM 1187, there will be times when access to Robert, James, John and Jearl streets will be limited. Two of the four streets will always be accessible from FM 1187. Motorists are encouraged to allow for extra time when traveling through this area.

At the council meeting Thursday, Aledo Mayor Kit Marshall stressed the need for communication during the street closures.

“I want to make it very clear that there will be constant communication with city staff to know exactly when that happens to give notice to the people on those streets,” she said.

Construction of FM 1187 by TxDOT is expected to be completed by Sept. 1, 2014.
