A long-range facility planning committee for the Aledo ISD will be forming in the next two or three weeks, according to action taken by the school board last week.
The committee will consider enrollment projections, facilities and capital improvements, financial information, attendance rezoning and new construction, resulting in a 10-year growth plan.
“The objective is to look at a lot of different things,” Superintendent Derek Citty said. “The last technology bond issue was in 2008; six-year-old technology is getting pretty obsolete. We’re going to look at safety and security every time.
“We’ll look at grade configuration and make sure we’re doing the right thing for our kids because we’re on the cusp of a really strong building program over the next 15 or 20 years, and we want to make sure that we have that the way the community wants.”
Citty said the district will seek a committee of 70 percent patrons, with a cross-section geographically and across different grade levels. Ideally, the committee will contain members of the business community, taxpayers without Aledo ISD students, retirees, an engineer, an architect, and district residents living both north and south of the interstate.
Eight campuses as well as each of the seventh through 12th grades will be represented by two parents and one district employee, Citty said, except for the smaller Learning Center, which will be represented by one parent and one teacher.
Of 15 at-large appointees, trustees will pick seven and Citty and board president Jay Stringer will select eight.
The committee will meet twice monthly beginning March 4, presenting a list of recommendations and pricing at the July board meeting.
“At that point in time trustees will begin careful deliberations as to how to approach that list of needs and how to package them, perhaps call a bond election,” Citty said. “I think it’s inevitable that we have to do something about the growth; we simply cannot proceed with the number of campuses we have. We’ve already seen we can’t proceed with the grade configuration we have.”
Application forms for the 2025 committee are online and must be returned no later than noon, Feb. 14. Applicants will be notified of their membership by Feb. 27.
