Of all the employees honored at Weatherford College’s Awards Dinner Friday night, Sheila Kinkead was the most fun to watch. While the employees receiving expected service awards were happy, Kinkead was truly surprised – stunned, even – when she heard her name announced as Weatherford College’s Staff Member of the Year.
“I never thought I could win this,” she said. “I am so honored and so happy. Everyone at WC is like family to me, and (referring to her upcoming January retirement), I will miss each and every one of you. Thank you.”
Kinkead, secretary for the Department of Fine Arts and Mathematics, started her career at WC in 1994. She has been active in college committees, chairing the Employee Recognition Committee, and is an invaluable asset to the college, assisting faculty and staff. As expressed in the introduction of Kinkead by Dr. Richard Bowers, vice president of instruction, “Sheila goes about her job quietly and efficiently, and we all depend on her.”
The Staff Member of the Year award, determined by a vote by college staff, recognizes the one employee whose outstanding contributions to the college are considered above and beyond regular job responsibilities and whose work exemplifies a high standard of excellence.
With the honor comes a plaque, a $1,000 cash award and round-trip airfare for two up to $800 to Kinkead’s choice of destinations, provided by the WC Foundation.
Other nominees for the Staff Member of the Year were Gini Chesney, Michael Endy, Adam Finley, Nikki Harless, Karen Long, Paul Stone and Rhonda Torres. Each earlier had been selected as Staff Member of the fall or spring semester.
Also honored were employees who have served the college for a combined 685 years:
• Ralph Willingham — 40 years.
• Marilyn St. Clair — 35 years.
• Dr. Arleen Atkins; Mike Brown and Lela Morris — 30 years.
• Glenda Aslin and Brenda Key — 25 years.
