Western Art Show calls for artists

The Weatherford Art Association is currently issuing a “Call for Artists” for the 2014 WAA Western Art Show and Sale that will run Monday, Jan. 13, through Sunday, Feb. 9.

Prospectus and entry forms are available at the Firehouse Gallery, 119 Palo Pinto St., or at weatherfordart.com.

All western-themed art works for the Weatherford Art Association Western Art Show in any media that have not previously been in the show and have been created within the last three years are eligible for this judged show. Registration dates are Jan. 8-10, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., at the Firehouse Gallery at 119 Palo Pinto St., in Weatherford. All framed art must be wired for hanging (no saw-toothed hangers). Plexiglass is required for works on paper.

Registration fees for non-members is $15 per entry, limit of three entries, and for members $10 per entry, with a limit of three entries per artist. Cash awards will be presented at the show reception on Friday, Jan. 17, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Artist Randy Meador will judge the show, and Homer Norris, of Aledo, is the art show’s featured artist and special guest.

Few figures in Parker County are as beloved as Norris. Humble, inquisitive, appreciative and gifted beyond measure, he is artist and storyteller, archaeologist and explorer, student and teacher.

One of 11 children born to a brilliant, yet poor, Aledo welder, during the bleak days of the Great Depression, Norris roamed the countryside and found his spirit’s nourishment in this land. Drawn to the romantic history of Parker County’s artifacts and relics, mesmerized by the loveliness to be found in a simple iris, captivated by the tales told by old timers, he developed a passion for beauty and formidable love for his home and its people. To this day he gleans joy, solace and awe from this rugged terrain.
