Early blooms iced at Chandor Gardens

— Steven Chamblee, the horticulturist at Chandor Gardens, trims back a bed of Chinese Fringe Flower, a shrub which is usually a cascade of hot pink blossoms and showy purple-green foliage with the advent of spring, which officially began Friday. The cold weather — including an 11-degree low when many plants were already sporting blossoms — has made the early spring display a “disaster” this year, Chamblee said. Barring another freeze, late bloomers should refresh the sparse look in a few weeks. Bluebonnets are still three weeks away.
