This time, Riley cruises past McKay in judge’s race

By JUDY SHERIDAN

County Judge Mark Riley knocked it out of the park against challenger Cary McKay in final but unofficial returns in Tuesday night’s Republican primary, securing 62 percent of the total votes cast with a final count of 7,524 to 4,670.

“It is humbling to have served the taxpayers for 23 years already,” Riley said. “I’ve worked hard to do what’s right, and the voters understand that. It’s been a positive campaign.”

Riley faced McKay in the 2010 Republican primary as well, squeaking by in a close match separated by just 205 votes.

“Four years ago things were different politically,” Riley said. “There was a general distrust of government. This race was about local politics and the right thing to do for Parker County.”

“I want to thank the people who helped me,” an upbeat McKay said. “We knocked on well over 3,200 doors and spent about $4,500. It’s hard doing things the grassroots way.

“But if people don’t mind paying more taxes, there’s nothing I can do about that.”

Riley, 63, is serving his fourth term as county judge. Prior to that he  served two terms as a county commissioner. He is secretary of the Regional Transportation Council.

In his campaign the judge stressed his leadership in the historic courthouse restoration and the voter-approved $80 million transportation bond. He pledged to support the Parker County Sheriff’s Office.

The 46-year-old McKay, a commercial/residential developer, vowed to do everything in his power to lower taxes during his campaign.
