Crown Valley opens as public golf course

Crown Valley Golf Club, which has been closed since former owners filed for bankruptcy in 2011, is now open to the public Fridays through Sundays, according to golf pro Brett Beaty.

Beaty will run the golf course for Tony Martinez Golf Management, which was originally hired by the course’s owner, First National Bank of Granbury, as a consultant. The company is now negotiating a lease agreement with the bank and hopes to close within a week.

Several changes have been made. The new course will be a daily fee golf course that anyone can play, Beaty said, instead of offering memberships.

Changes have also been made in the design of the 18-hole course.

A soft opening took place the first weekend in May, he said, so friends and former golf club members could give the course a test drive. A grand opening is scheduled for July 1.

Beaty said the changes, which the company began working on a year ago, include re-doing two holes, building two new ones, adding tee boxes, reducing the number of bunkers and making the mow patterns wider.

“The feedback we had was that the bunkers were tough and the 18th hole hard,” Beaty said. “We wanted to get rid of that.

“I think golfers are going to find a fair, challenging fun experience. The fairways are easier to hit and the greens are big. It’s more suited to all levels of golfers.”

Beaty said the golf shop has been moved to the other side of the clubhouse, which allows better traffic flow and good visibility of the course.

“There are six big windows, and I can see holes 10, 1, 9 and 18 — where people start and finish — which is really important to make sure everything’s going OK,” he said.

Between now and July 1 the company will finish getting the 170-acre course prepared, with workers mowing and installing grass on top of the new tee boxes.

During this time the fee will be discounted to $18, Beaty said.

Crown Valley Golf Club is located at 29 Crown Road in Weatherford. For more information, contact Beaty at 817-441-1044.
