WC receives Workforce grant

Weatherford Democrat

— The Texas Workforce Commission has awarded Weatherford College’s Workforce and Economic Development program an additional $174,900 to purchase equipment.

Last year, the college received an initial Skills Development Fund grant of $476,076.

“We were granted these funds to purchase welding equipment because of the outstanding performance and successful training we have provided through our current grant,” said Julie Lundy, workforce training and development coordinator at WC. “This brings our grand total for the grant to $651,066. The grant is in partnership with PECO Facet in Mineral Wells, and we will have provided 20,000-plus hours of training to more than 290 employees by its completion in April 2014.”

The welding equipment includes a welding simulator that is a state-of-the-art training tool.

“We hope this additional equipment will enable us to add a new welding school in the fall of 2014,” said Terry Pilgrim, Workforce and Continuing Education coordinator. “We currently have a waiting list for our welding classes, and this new welding program will enable students to train during the day and complete their certification much quicker. ”
