Aledo losing public works director

Aledo Public Works Director Gordon Smith, who has juggled an extraordinary amount of incoming infrastructure for the city in recent months, will leave his job March 26 to move to Burkburnett, where his parents live.

He will also assume the City of Burkburnett’s public works director position.

“Most cities don’t have the number of projects going on that we’ve had,” Mayor Kit Marshall explained, lamenting Smith’s resignation at a Rise and Dine event Wednesday.

“Gordon has been the glue that has helped these projects stay on track and move and go where they need to be going.”

During Smith’s five-year tenure he spent many hours managing key water, sewer and road projects, Marshall said, understanding his job to be much more than a paycheck.

“He has a heart for the city, a heart for our residents and a heart for our businesses,” she said.

Smith has overseen Aledo’s connection to Fort Worth surface water, including the installation of the landmark Aledo water tower, miles of large-diameter water main and the Aledo/Fort Worth meter vault-pump station.

He managed the expansion of the wastewater treatment plant, a project that earned an award for excellence from the Texas Municipal League.

“I am highly appreciative to have fulfilled the director of public works responsibilities under the vision and mission of Mayor Marshall and city council,” Smith emailed.

“Aledo truly has a rich heritage that I am proud to be a part of and a dynamic future that will sustain the city for decades to come.

“I have worked along some excellent colleagues and had the wonderful opportunity to lead an award-winning public works team. Truly, I consider everyone I have met in Aledo to be friends and look forward to visiting in the near future.”

Marshall said she thinks Aledo’s up-and-coming reputation will result in a number of qualified candidates for Smith’s post, which — with two large road projects still in process — she hopes to fill as soon as possible.
