Renovations to TCU will upend Aledo High School’s regular graduation plans for this school year and the next, according to a recent report to the Aledo ISD school board from Deputy Superintendent Lynn McKinney.
The district has staged commencement exercises at Daniel—Meyer Coliseum, a basketball arena on the TCU campus, for the past decade.
McKinney said AHS principal Dan Peterson is now working on a one-year contract with Mansfield ISD for the use of its performing arts center for the June 8, 2014 ceremony.
The center is comparable in cost, seats 5,300, offers adequate, free parking and meets Aledo ISD’s two-week window for graduation, she said, but it is 36 miles from Aledo, twice the distance to TCU in Fort Worth.
Peterson explored seven alternative venues, including TCC, UNT and UTA, McKinney said, rejecting some due to seating limitations and others because schedules didn’t mesh. She said he was still looking for a graduation site for the 2014-15 school year.
Trustees asked Peterson to investigate the Will Rogers complex in Fort Worth.
