Aledo ISD trustees will host a town hall meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, in the board room of the administration building to answer residents’ questions about a proposed tax rate increase for the 2013-14 school year.

The board has adopted a budget with $50.8 million projected in expenditures — up 6.2 percent from this year’s — and is supporting it with an assumed tax rate of $1.49 per $100 assessed value — 6.5 cents higher than the current year’s rate — as well as $1.6 million from reserves.

The tax rate has not been adopted, however, and could be raised or lowered, depending on how much the board decides to withdraw from roughly $20 million in reserves.

The maximum amount the rate can be raised is 13 cents, the amount published in a notice announcing the Aug. 26 public hearing.

The 6.5-cent increase on the table would raise the taxes for the owner of a $250,000 home by $162 per year, while a 13-cent increase would raise the annual tax bill by $300.

AISD superintendent Dr. Derek Citty said residents who spoke at the public hearing offered valuable insight.

“We are committed to helping you understand the issues regarding the district’s fiscal responsibility,” he said. “We also want to ensure your questions are answered.”
