Charlie and Nelda Sullivan celebrate 70th anniversary

The family of Charlie and Nelda Sullivan will be celebrating the couple’s 70th wedding anniversary with a reception on Saturday, Dec. 14. The come-and-go event will be held in the Weatherford College Doss Student Center’s Allene Strain Room from 1 to 4 p.m.

Charlie and Nelda met at an Alameda High School girls basketball game—he was the referee and she was the player. They were married Dec. 18, 1943, at her parents’ home in Eastland County.

Charlie served in the Army and honorably discharged as a staff sergeant with more than 1,800 men under his command when he left. He went on to study at Ranger College and Abilene Christian University, and then embarked on a long career in the insurance business.

Nelda attended Mary Hardin Baylor, then business school.  She worked in a district attorney’s office, for school districts and in tax offices, and then helped manage the family insurance business.

The Sullivans have a long history of service in Parker County.  Moving to the area in 1950, Charlie was elected mayor of Weatherford in 1956, not long after his longtime friend Jim Wright served in the same position.  The Sullivans helped form the original Weatherford Little League Association, building the city’s first youth baseball field.

The couple has supported the Weatherford College basketball program since 1950. The WC Board of Trustees named Charlie a “Friend of Weatherford College” in 1995 and he was inducted to the Coyote Wall of Honor in 1997 for decades of support.

The Sullivans have three sons, John, Bobby and David. They also have four grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren

In lieu of gifts, the family is asking that friends make a donation to the Coyote Basketball Booster Club on their behalf.
