The First time’s a charm — Aledo baseball took advantage of its first-ever trip to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) State Baseball Tournament, scoring 13 runs while ceding just one in the semifinal and final contests on Thursday and Friday. Behind catcher Zayne Willems’ three RBIs and pitcher Taco Anderson’s 3-hit MVP performance on the mound, the Bearcats took ownership of the 2014 Class 4A title, beating Victoria East on Friday, 4-0. The Aledo double-up — winning a softball and a baseball championship in the same year has happened only twice before in UIL competition, and is the first occurrence in Class 4A. The Bearcats won the semifinal with a 9-1 romp on Thursday, beating Hallsville.
