Making people feel empowered is something Kerry Tate believes is in everyone. It’s his job to bring it out.
After 3 1/2 years in his former location, Tate moved his Tate’s Total Training facility across the street to 125 N. Elm St. in Weatherford in January as a result of his expanding clientele over the years. He said the move into the larger location has helped his business grow even further.
Tate, who has been a personal trainer for more than 20 years, says he likes to focus on those of the “baby boomer” age.
“I like the baby boomer age because, surprisingly, many of those people have never been in a gym,” Tate said. “That’s a good thing because there are no bad habits to break. I call this the place where baby boomers come to work out.”
He began running a gym in Graham in 1987. Tate then worked as a custom home builder for a while before the economy forced him to go back into business for himself.
He said personal training is about 70 percent of his business what his gym of 250 clients and members focuses on. He said many personal trainers aren’t even qualified to train.
“If I’m looking at a personal trainer, I’m asking myself ‘what qualities do you have to train me,’” Tate said.Tate himself is a member of the National Academy of Sports Medicine and is a certified personal trainer by that organization.
“Many personal trainers don’t keep up and don’t change with the times, which is needed today,” Tate said. “Personal training is similar but there are some differences.”
With Tate liking to work with baby boomers, there is the ability to work with people with aching knees, hips, joints, etc. That’s why he likes to sit down with an individual before workouts even start to find out what the individual needs and wants to be able to do so a custom workout schedule can be developed unique to them.
“Not everyone wants to be a personal trainer, or completely ripped, when they’re done. They want to be able to mow their lawn, to rake leaves, to keep up with their kids,” Tate said. “I want to listen to what they want first so they can be functionally fit. Once we get people to that point, there will be time to lose weight and tone up.”
He said many people leave a workout feeling weak and powerless, which is the wrong way to feel.
“When you’re done with me, you need to leave the gym feeling empowered, not beat up,” Tate said.
When starting to work out, Tate, who says he does around 15 30-minute sessions a day, said he believes in focusing on an individual’s balance, core training, working on a person’s reaction time, their fall prevention stability and eventually getting into strength and fitness once those areas come about.
