Heading out

Weatherford Democrat

It’s the time of year where outdoor events abound. Doss Heritage and Culture Center has a new space to take advantage of the warmer weather.

Event Coordinator Miranda Murphy says the newly expanded outdoor event space, which opened April 6 after four months of work, is perfect for weddings of up to 200 people. She said the idea for the space came from the public.

“We kept hearing how that area behind the building would be perfect for an outdoor wedding with a little work,” Murphy said. “That was kind of my ‘make it work’ moment.”

Murphy said the facility previously held around 3-4 weddings a year for about 50 people. With the recent work being done, which included construction of a bridge, a small path near the building’s handicapped parking for those guests with mobility issues, and the clearing out of a number of trees and brush, the facility is now booked solid for weddings for the rest of the year.

“We have a couple of openings in November and December around Thanksgiving and Christmas but other than that we are full on Saturdays for the rest of the year,” Murphy said. “We have lots of openings for 2014, however.”

What makes the work even more worthwhile is the fact much of it was done in-house with center staff, board members, family members and volunteers pitching in, Murphy said. She said the space came together over the four workdays with her and staff member Nathan Beck, who constructed the bridge, doing additional work whenever possible.

With the Doss Center being a non-profit facility, there is still some minor work to be done outside. The planting of some very small areas of sod, having no direct electricity to the space and one outside plug are some of the improvements Murphy would like to see done in time. Still, the large shaded area that features a nice breeze with the trees surrounding the venue and the competitive prices provide for a nice facility.

Murphy says the venue’s prices and amenities will compete with anyone’s. For a flat $2,000, the venue is covered for an entire day, including wedding and reception space along with all the outside grounds for photo shoots. For an additional $500, the day before can be rented out for decorating and rehearsal activities.

Tables and chairs for both the ceremony and reception (including setup) are included with the price along with a top of the line sound system. A full size catering kitchen is available along with a downstairs room that allows the bridal party to get ready in style.

A center staff member is onsite at all times to make sure things go flawlessly. For more information on the facility and rentals, contact Murphy at 599-6168 or e-mail her at To check out the facility and what it provides, visit and click on facility rentals.
