He hits the road

By BRIAN SMITH

Jeff Meador Jr. has been working on engines as long as he can remember, “cutting teeth on 350s when I was crawling around on a greasy shop floor.”

After passing his general education development test, the Parker County native received his automotive degree in diesel and small engine technology from Texas State Technical College in Waco. While running an auto repair shop here in Weatherford, Meador’s dad asked if he would go over to a friend’s house and look at a riding lawn mower, which wasn’t running right.

“I went over there, cleaned out the carburetor, put it back in and it was running like a champ," Meador said.

The man was extremely appreciative and offered to pay Meador for his assistance as he was unable to get the mower to a repair shop. Meador refused a number of times, but the man’s offer did give him an idea.

“I began to think about how many other people may not have the time or way to get their engines to a repair shop,” Meador said. “I know there are some shops that have a three or four week wait to even look at an engine.”

Because of his love of engines and with more than 15 years of experience, he opened Jeff’s Small Engine Repair. Just after opening his business, he was hit with a cold dose of reality, as a motorcycle accident caused major damage to his right wrist. Doctors had a grim prognosis, saying one of the right wrist bones “looked like corn flakes” and could cause permanent loss of function in the wrist.

Meador didn’t listen and overcame the odds. He said that he had 75 percent to 85 percent function in the wrist a year later. The wrist does look swollen even more than five years later but he says it doesn’t hamper him from doing and being around “the only thing I’ve ever known.”
