Getting sassy

When you enter Jo Smith’s antique shop at 121 Dallas St., in Weatherford, you’ll be guaranteed to get a bit of “sass.”

It’s only natural, however, that Smith, with her effervescent personality, would open Sassy Gals Antiques. Smith  moved to Texas from Washington, D.C. less than three years ago as a result taking a position in Fort Worth. She said opening an antique shop is something she had wanted to do for the last 20 years. The opportunity presented itself and the rest is history.

“I really wanted to come back west of the Mississippi,” Smith, a Missouri native who goes by her middle name, said. “My husband Bob got us to Texas and this shop became available, so I opened it. I went in feet first and I am having the time of my life.”

The shop opened last December but “fully evolved” this past February with a group of women that Smith says are just as sassy as she is. Smith said the name took a lot of time effort to develop and was not taken lightly. Smith’s sense of humor and wanting to have a different type of antique store comes out from the moment you open the door, as shoppers are greeted by the shop mascot, a six-foot-tall skeleton named Irene, which was purchased in New Mexico.

There are eight dealers at the store with Smith, Rhonda Powell and Kelly Woods holding down the fort full time with the other five dealers: Linda Menchaca, Katie Kimbro,  Laurie Tiscione, Debra Higdon, and Linda Fisher all having other jobs and coming into the shop when they are available or during busy times such as festivals, Smith said.

All the women are local, living around the Mineral Wells, Weatherford and Springtown areas. Smith said Powell and Woods are great partners and share her passion for the antiques.
