Midweek editorial page kicks off

Steve Boggs, Democrat Publisher

Welcome to the Wednesday opinion page. Today marks the beginning of a new feature in the Weatherford Democrat lineup. Readers will still enjoy the normal Sunday Opinion lineup, featuring columnist Larry Jones, editor Phil Riddle, a wide variety of letters to the editor and questions of the week.

We are starting a second opinion page to allow readers additional space for feedback in the form of letters to the editor. This page will be anchored each week by results from our online question. Readers are asked to visit our Web site, www.weatherforddemocrat.com, and vote in our online poll each week. This was once a popular feature that we’re reviving specifically for this space.

This week we feature results from the current question regarding alcohol sales in the city of Weatherford. That issue will be on the November ballot and is sure to draw attention as the election draws closer.

We will also be soliciting opinion columns from various community and business leaders throughout the community on national and state topics, focusing on how those topics impact us locally.

We encourage our readers to submit letters to the editor. The guidelines are listed, and are fairly clear-cut. In this space readers will also be able to sample opinions from many national and regional writers.

We want to readers who responded to our recent survey on the Democrat’s comics page(s). Response was huge, and most readers were very candid about what they read, what they don’t read, and what they want to see in your local newspaper. Look for more opportunities to give us feedback as we work to make the newspaper a reflection of the community at large.

In case you haven’t noticed, school is about to begin. Aug. 25 is the first day of classes and already the kids are gathering. Pre-season workouts are under way for football, band, drill teams and other fall sports. I felt sorry for the line of kids jogging along West Oak Street the other morning. Of course, I’m betting they feel sorry for me when they hear my bones crack getting out of the car every morning, too.

Motorists need to beware that buses will be running in a week or so and the school sites will soon be bustling with activity.

Look for a new magazine in town at the end of the month. Weatherford magazine is a new quarterly magazine designed specifically for readers trying to keep up with everything going on in town. The first issue will be distributed around town Sept. 1 and will feature the most comprehensive calendar of events available in Weatherford. It’s free and full of times, dates, events and information to help keep you on schedule.
