Little League Baseball
This is one of the most successful programs for young people, both normal and handicapped. All of the people involved in this program are volunteers, and they do wonderful work in developing character and teamwork in children. I attended quite a few games, and it was amazing how the teams had developed from the beginning of the season to the end. The June Parade Magazine article said there are 160,000 Little League teams in 80 countries, and 3.9 million fans watched the Little League World Series. That is why ESPN/ABC gave the Little League an eight-year contract for TV rights in the amount of $60 million. Children from all over the world compete to be one of the final two and win a trip to Williamsport, Pennsylvania. You all should attend a game played by the handicapped players. They all need help, but the joy in their faces when they cross home plate is a miracle in itself. What do you think?
Dallas Council members are seeking a 60 percent pay raise, which would bump their pay up between $37,500 to $60,000 per year. The first question I would ask is are the council members full-time or is this just a part-time job in addition to a regular job or business? The members now receive $25,000 per year. This looks like a money grab to me, and if successful, council members in other towns and cities will follow suit. Most cities have a mayor and a city manager, so the council job is part-time anyway. I am against paying big taxpayer money for city council jobs. What do you think?
I read where the sport of golf has fallen on hard times with over 650,000 young male players deciding to give up the game. However, about 260,000 women took up the sport. This drop in golfers, of course, affected the golf manufacturing industry negatively. I am too old to play golf now, but when I was playing, I played on public courses. The number of courses was too low for the number of golfers, and they were so crowded that it was very time consuming to get in a round of golf. I cannot say for sure, but I think this was, and still is, one of the main reasons many players give up the game. I know it really reduced the number of times I played. What do you think?
