Volunteer firefighter from tiny town among plant explosion missing

NAVARRO MILLS, Tex. — A firefighter from this small town's volunteer fire department is reported missing in the fertilizer plant explosion that killed several people and injured dozens of others in West, Tex., Wednesday night.

He is identified as Perry Calvin, 37, a member of the Navarro Mills Fire Department since 1966. His pickup truck was found at the horrific scene of the explosion.

Phil Calvin, chief of the Navarro Mills Fire Department and father of the missing man, said his son had been attending an EMT training class in West when a fire alarm alerted him t o a blaze at the fertilizer plant.

"He and another boy (classmate) responded to the fire alarm for the West Fire Department," said the father. "They got to the fire scene before the explosion. They were both right there at the explosion site."

The body of the classmate, a volunteer firefighter from another county, was found in the plant rubble Thursday morning, officials said. But they discovered no trace of Perry Calvin. "We're hoping he got sent to a hospital," said his father.

Details for this story were provided by the Corsicana, Tex., Daily Sun.
