Fall vegetable gardening program next week

ALEDO — WEATHERFORD — For a successful fall garden, don’t wait until fall to get started.

With the lack of spring rains and the rapid warm up with extended summer heat, many spring planted vegetable gardens have not performed very well this year, Jon Green, County Extension Agent-Ag, said. However, there is still hope for a plentiful garden this fall if gardeners prepare soon.

Many vegetables actually perform better under our fall weather conditions, Green said.

To learn more about this topic, the Parker County office of the Texas AgriLife Extension Service is offering a fall vegetable gardening seminar at 6.30 p.m. Tuesday, July 26, at the Parker County Agriculture Services Center meeting room, 604 N. Main St. in Weatherford, with a cost of $10 per person, payable at the door.

Guest speaker Steve Chaney, extension horticulture agent from Tarrant County, will discuss soil preparation and proper soil amendment recommendations, water recommendations and water conservation practices, fall vegetable selections, and ways to manage and reduce various gardening problems that might be encountered, Green said.

Fall gardening planting schedules will be available to those attending.

For several years members of the Greenwood Volunteer Fire Department have wanted a ceremonial bell that could be used in the department’s firefighting ceremonies. A few months ago, residents Robbie and Melinda Mayes-Kelly made a donation to the department for the specific purpose of acquiring a bell. Then Enrico Barone, another resident, saw the bell at the station and offered to build a stand for it. Enrico is retired and is a skilled woodworker. He built a beautiful stand which has wheels and is mobile.
