Local church hosts patriotic service Sunday

WEATHERFORD — WEATHERFORD — One Nation Under God is the focus of the worship service Sunday, as Calvary Methodist Church, 210 Garner Road, Weatherford, observes Independence Day.

As a three-year World War II veteran, followed by a career as an Air Force chaplain, pastor John C. Johnson said he is fiercely patriotic and not embarrassed by it.

For him, religion and patriotism go hand-in-hand.

He notes that Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence and the third U.S. president, once wrote, “How little do my countrymen know what precious blessings they are in possession of, and which no other people on earth enjoy.”

Johnson has extended an invitation to anyone who does not have home church ties to share an hour of thanksgiving at Calvary Methodist.

Visitors will be welcomed and hear soloist Jana Mason sing “God Bless America.” The service is at 11 a.m.
