Regional meet adds up for members of Poolville Junior High’s Math Team

Three PJH teams advance to state competition

— POOLVILLE – The Poolville Junior High Math Team competed March 9 in the regional qualifying meet at Azle High School, returning home with a number of honors and sending three teams to state competition.

The team competed against other Class 1A schools in attendance, according to coach Susan Garmon.

The PJH team took first place in Number Sense, first in Calculator, second in Science and third place in Mathematics and won first place in the Sweepstakes category. Garmon said that means  three teams will advance to the state meet taking place April 6. Teams finishing first or second qualify for state.

The Number Sense team advancing to state consists of Matt Simmons, Hannah Megason, Christopher Tunnell and Sarah Kelly. 

The Calculator Team advancing to state consists of Matt Simmons, Christopher Tunnell, Sarah Kelly and Tyler Tunnell.

The Science Team advancing to state consists of Hannah Megason, Sarah Kelly, Logan Spikes and Matt Stewart.

Some team members did not advance by being on the team, but placed individually, Garmon said. The individual places at the regional meet were as follows:

Eighth grade

Matt Simmons won first in Number Sense, first in Calculator, second in Mathematics and fifth in Science.

Hannah Megason won second in Number Sense, second in Calculator and fourth in Mathematics and fourth in Science.

Jacob Alvarado won third in Number Sense, third in Calculator, fifth in Mathematics and sixth in Science.

Seventh grade

Christopher Tunnell won first in Calculator, fourth in Number Sense, seventh in Science and eighth in Mathematics.

Sixth grade

Sarah Kelly placed second in Number Sense, second in Calculator, second in Science and third in Mathematics.

Logan Spikes placed second in Mathematics, third in Calculator, fifth in Science and sixth in Number Sense.

Tyler Tunnell placed first in Calculator, fourth in Number Sense, seventh in Mathematics and eighth in Science.

Matt Stewart placed third in Science, fourth in Mathematics, fourth in Calculator and seventh in Number Sense.

Fifth grade

Elijah Batchelor placed second in Calculator, third in Number Sense, sixth in Science and ninth in Mathematics.

Linze Carwile placed fourth in Calculator, fourth in Mathematics, seventh in Science and seventh in Number Sense.

Madison Megason placed fifth in Science, eighth in Number Sense and eighth in Mathematics.

Fourth grade (competing as fifth graders)

Ethan Elliott placed first in Number Sense, third in Calculator, third in Mathematics and fourth in Science.

Wyatt Thomas was first in Calculator, second in Mathematics, fourth in Number Sense and ninth in Science.

Clara Tunnell placed sixth in Number Sense, sixth in Mathematics and eighth in Science.

Lexi Heiser placed fifth in Number Sense, fifth in Mathematics and 10th in Science.
