WCS sharpshooter has her sights set on Junior Olympics

When Weatherford Christian School sophomore Rhiann Travis joined the Parker County 4-H Shooting Sports it sounded fun, but a year and-a-half later, it has also become the road to the Junior Olympics, college and beyond.

Rhiann shoots an Olympic-style three-position precision rifle. This summer she attended the Civilian Marksmanship Program Junior Air Rifle Camp at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

There she received instruction from collegiate shooters and concluded the week with a personal best of 585/600 with 37 bulls eyes in the CMP camp match, placing her third going into the finals. The first and second place qualifiers tied with scores of 586.

Rhiann was the only competitor of the eight finalists shooting a first-time finals, a 10-shot match with each timed 45 second shot individually executed and announced. Rhiann held her own to claim third out of 30 and eighth out of 170 competitors nationwide.

Her short-term goal is to qualify in both air and small bore rifle for the Junior Olympics to be held at Colorado Springs in April.

As for her long term goals, Rhiann believes, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Philippians 4:13.
