WCS Lions’ Gala raises record amount

The recent Lions’ Gala held at North Side Baptist Church benefiting Weatherford Christian School set an all-time record fundraising high.

The event is an annual spring fundraiser for the local pre-K3 through 12th-grade school.

The event themed, “Picturing the Future of WCS,” raised more than $133,800 for further growth and development. The event consisted of four different auctions – silent, super silent, live and the newest auction added this year, the centerpiece auction. Each table centerpiece was decorated by local businesses in Weatherford, which gave business owners an opportunity to advertise their store and partner with WCS for beautiful decorations for the event.

In all the school featured more than 350 different items and packages for sale the night of the March 22 gala.

The biggest excitement came during the live auction when the school featured 15 exclusive items, ranging from pro sporting suites and a buck hunt in Borden, Colo., to a week’s stay in private homes in both Santa Fe, N.M., and Steamboat Springs, Colo. But the best was saved for last when local artist and photographer Baily Mize, who had been painting a one-of-a-kind portrait on stage the entire time the live auction was happening, was the last item to be auctioned off. Mize’s painting sold for $13,000 and was donated back to the school to be hung in their elementary campus lobby. The live auction alone raised over $52,000.

The Lions’ gala also featured inspirational keynote speaker and athletic director for The Flippen Group Brad McCoy, father to past and present University of Texas quarterbacks Colt and Case McCoy. McCoy encouraged and applauded the school for “preparing the child for the path and not the path for the child.” He went on to engage guests with humorous stories and personal testimonies of the important role educators play in children’s lives and how WCS must stay committed to their mission and continue to press forward.
