Black’s “Common Sense” visits Tarleton

STEPHENVILLE — He was only on stage for about an hour, but in that short time he whooped and hollered, fell to the ground, changed hats (twice) and kept people laughing.

Cowboy poet and humorist Baxter Black, D.V.M., treated leaders in the field of equine science to a presentation during an agricultural conference held Jan. 21 on Tarleton State University’s campus. Don Henneke, Ph.D., director of equine sciences at Tarleton, arranged Black’s visit.

Black, described by the New York Times as “ … probably the nation’s most successful living poet,” regaled the audience by reciting poems with topics ranging from Sheryl Crow to shoeing horses.

Black told the audience that he holds agriculture dear to his heart. A true cowboy and former large animal veterinarian, the entertainer now “makes a living speaking at agricultural seminars.”

Black’s syndicated column “On the Edge of Common Sense” appears in numerous publications, including “The Quarter Horse Journal.” Black also regularly appears on National Public Radio and RFD-TV and has had numerous well-received books and CDs.

Black donated copies of those books and CDs to everyone in attendance. Before leaving, he took the time to sign autographs, swap stories and jokes and even share some family photos.

“I love people, and I just love entertaining them,” he said.
