The Cow Pony rides into Weatherford
Janis Saunders, Democrat Food Critic
A new restaurant has opened in Weatherford out on I-20 and Tin Top Road, in the space formerly occupied by Coronado’s. Tom and Susie Christman are the owners.
Tom is originally from the West Coast, but has been a Texan for 13 years. He has been involved in food service for years and opened the Cow Pony with a new concept in mind — food and musical entertainment.
Friday and Saturday nights will be “show” nights. For example, this last Saturday night Scott Copeland was in concert at the Cow Pony. There is a dance floor in the back, so you can eat in the front of the restaurant and dance in the back.
The dining room decor is attractive. The tables are draped with beige linen tablecloths and napkins. The restaurant seems more open than it has been in past ownerships.
They serve lunch as well as dinner and there are two menus available. The lunch menu has hamburgers, salads and luncheon steaks. I ordered the fried chicken salad. It had pieces of chicken, pecans, cornbread croutons and assorted salad greens in it. The dressing is bacon mustard honey and was good. Jim got the same salad, but with grilled chicken breast and greens.
The dinner menu is an expansion of the luncheon, but with the addition of some good steaks. You can choose sides ranging from french fries, onion rings, grilled asparagus, garlic mashed potatoes and jalapeno cole slaw to name a few.
That Texas standby, chicken fried steak served with jalapeno gravy and sides is also on the menu.
I didn’t see a children’s menu listed, but I’m sure they make allowances in serving size for the kiddos.
Right now there are only two dessert items offered, but I can attest to one of them as being sinfully good. Jim and I shared a caramel apple goldrush dessert. It was a pastry shell with sliced apples, cinnamon, brown sugar and vanilla ice cream. The sauce is described as one with Crown Royal whiskey and raspberry sauce combined. It was brought out hot and bubbling and was delicious. Tom said they are adding a devilish delightful brownie to the menu to join the pie and strawberry New York-style cheesecake. What a way to end a meal!
The Cow Pony is open Sunday through Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to midnight. On Friday and Saturday night they are open 11:30 a.m. to 2 a.m. Their phone number is (817) 565-8176 if you want more information. The address is 2132 Tin Top Road and is in the strip shopping center behind the building formerly occupied by Dixie House Cafe.
I wish the Cow Pony luck and welcome to Weatherford.
