Letters to the Editor, Jan. 20, 2008

God bless us, everyone

Dear editor,

On behalf of the congregation at The Church in Peaster, I would like to thank the sponsors and actors who participated in, and the patrons who attended, this year’s production of “The Christmas Carol.”

As you may or may not know, all proceeds from the production and silent auction are going to charitable organizations in Parker County,

This year’s recipients are Grace House, Weatherford; Neighbor to Neighbor, Springtown; Kingdom Smile, Millsap; and The Center of Hope, Weatherford.

Due to the generous efforts of so many people and businesses, we raised more than $18,000, and it is our hope that we can double the donation in 2008.

Again, thank you Parker County for your vision and generosity.

As Tiny Tim says, “... May God bless us, everyone.”

Pastor John Anderson,

Senior Pastor,

The Church in Peaster

Thompson for president

Dear editor,

The 2008 presidential race is in full swing. A true power struggle has emerged between socialist-leaning liberals and the once thriving Reagan Conservative Movement.

I hope Fred Thompson becomes the next president of the United States and returns American to a smaller government, fiscally responsible, military-supporting country that will united all Americans buy implementing a government that truly makes sense.

Eric Baity,

Weatherford

Keeping the

facts straight

Dear editor,

Shame on The Weatherford Democrat for referring to the nuclear decommissioning trust fund, a public fund administered by the Public Utility Commission, as a slush fund.

This fund is the first step in ensuring that Texas will be the first state in the country to benefit from the building of clean, efficient nuclear power plants.

Phil King knows our electricity rates are too high and he took the leadership on this project to help ensure that we have the benefits of nuclear energy to help reduce the costs of electricity.

Everybody knows that nuclear energy is one of the most inexpensive ways to create electricity.

I’m glad Phil King is working for us.

Jimmy Day,

Weatherford

Power to the people

Dear editor,

To help meet the growing demand for additional electrical power in Texas, the state needs zero-emission nuclear power to help reduce carbon and other emissions and reduce overdependence on any one fuel. Through Chairman Phil King’s efforts, nuclear generation will safely and securely add power for millions of Texas households.

The Weatherford Democrat’s characterization of decommissioning trusts for new nuclear power plants was inaccurate. Decommissioning trusts pay for the removal of nuclear structures and returning the site for other uses when the plant is ultimately decommissioned. Generators are responsible for funding the trust, which is highly regulated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and the Texas Public Utility Commission.

Chairman King’s legislation worked hand-in-hand with the Energy Policy Act of 2005 to encourage nuclear investment and allow generators to pay into the trust over time rather than funding the entire amount during construction.

Chairman King’s legislation is vital to helping bring clean, no-carbon nuclear power to the state. Without it, new nuclear generation may not be possible in Texas.

Brad Porlier,

Vice President,

Nuclear Development,

NRG Energy

To the City of Weatherford

Dear editor,

This is my hometown, too. We tried for three years with questions and meetings to get you to leave the flow of traffic around the courthouse square alone until a loop could be built.

Now we have barriers concreted into the four main arteries like a fortress.

My hope is the next generation will cherish the history of our community and remove the barriers so our stately old courthouse can once again shine in all its glory.

This project was not a part of the Main Street Grant of 2002.

Virginia Cotten Scott,

Aledo

Liberal democrat funding Joe Tison

Dear editor,

I read the article on the Phil King/Joe Tison campaign funding with interest. Anyone who is following this race knows that Joe Tison’s largest out-of-district contributor was a liberal Austin-based political action committee, whose leader is a well known liberal Democrat.

No one will ever have to question Phil King’s commitment to the tax payers and the core principles of the Republican Party and that’s why he will be strongly re-elected.

Jim Trainor,

Weatherford
