Give me a reason
Dear editor,
Regarding the article in the Dec. 3 Democrat about the differences in the vote on the Weatherford College bonds and the Aledo ISD bonds — I can give you one perspective.
I voted for the college bonds and against the school bond. The major deciding factor for me was the amount of information available.
Dr. Birmingham made presentations to several groups around the county beginning in October. I attended one of those meetings and was able to have several questions answered. When more questions arose later, Birmingham supplied the answers to those, also. I knew the purpose of the bonds and how much my taxes would increase.
There was no readily available information from Aledo ISD about their bond package. Everything I know about their plans was learned in this same newspaper article. This was the first mention of a ninth grade center.
The voters have been chastised for not attending hearings concerning the bond issue. When and where were those hearings and how were they publicized?
Few people are willing to depart with money without a good reason. If someone wants money, then it is their responsibility to explain why. The voters shouldn’t be required to go searching for information.
If you want my money, then come to me and explain yourself.
Darrel Behrens,
Aledo
Misinformed readers
Dear editor,
Phil King is spreading false information about Texas Parent PAC because we encouraged Mayor Joe Tison to seek election to the Texas House of Representatives.
In your Tuesday edition, Mr. King stated that Texas Parent PAC started as a “teachers union.” That is simply not true.
Texas Parent PAC was formed in 2005, by parents and grandparents who were frustrated with the legislature’s lack of support for public education. Our primary goal is to have a top-notch public school in every neighborhood in Texas so all children can learn and succeed.
Texas Parent PAC’s board of directors is comprised of current and former leaders of PTAs and other parent groups. More than 700 parents, grandparents and community leaders have contributed funding and volunteer time to our bipartisan, grassroots campaign committee.
Carolyn Boyle,
Chair, Texas Parent PAC
Austin
The silent majority
Dear editor,
I’m still wondering who they are. The non-voters or the people who don’t care and don’t want to get involved.
Some people don’t pay attention to what’s going on. Some work hard long, hours to make a living for their families. To them that’s their purpose in life. Others feel like it doesn’t do any good to vote, they don’t feel they could change anything.
While this is going on, we have groups of power hungry people from the cities, counties, states, the federal government and the world who realize we have the silent majority and take advantage of this.
While we all sit silent, they make rules and laws that take away the rights of ordinary citizens if you’re not paying attention. The politicians pretend they’re doing it for the good of each of us. Actually they’re doing it for their own good.
They’re the ones who come out on the top with money in their pocket. They’re paid for from our taxes and big corporations pay them well to put forth and pass bills that will up their bottom line.
Remember the old expression, “tar and feather or run them out of town on a rail?” Texas has a bunch of politicians and their cohorts who need to have this done to them.
The end of the year is coming up and everyone needs to go register to vote. You really can make a difference, but be sure to vote, otherwise you will not make a difference.
Please register and vote. Let your voice be heard. This is called being a good citizen and doing your civil duty, and it’s your right. Don’t let anyone take it away from you.
Evelyn Connaway,
Weatherford
