— Ben and Dora Long will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, Sept. 11.
Ben and the former Dora “Dodie” Farquhar met in 1950 through a pen pal ad in a popular farm magazine. They married Sept. 11, 1953, at Walnut Creek Baptist Church in Reno, Texas.
Ben graduated from Weatherford High School and Weatherford College and attended Texas Christian University. He was drafted into the United States Army and was stationed in El Paso and then in Alaska as a section chief with an anti-aircraft company. Ben also served as chairman of the Parker County Republican Party for many years and was the first elected Republican county judge in Parker County.
Dora graduated from Springtown High School. She was a stenographer in the accounting department for Southwestern Bell and worked for the Corp of Engineers in Alaska. She has worked with Ben and managed the family’s dairy farm throughout their marriage. Dora is an expert cook and quilter and has won many awards for her works.
Their children include Karen Wilkinson and husband, Joe, Roy Long and wife, Tammy, Vickie Combs, Mark Long and wife, Jamee, and Scott Long. Their grandchildren include Sara Vick and husband, Scott, Quinn Dobbs, Chelsea Gamron and husband, Tony, Will Dobbs and wife, Kaci, Mandy Keas and husband, Justin, Betsy Hensley and husband, Travis, Benna Combs, Candice Walker and husband, Daniel, John Long and Justin Long. Great-grandchildren include Fredrick and Grant Vick and Audrey Keas.
Ben and Dora are active members of Lakeshore Drive Baptist Church, where Ben teaches a Sunday school class. They continue to be busy with a large herd of beef cows and hay acreage.
The couple not only consider themselves husband and wife, but also are a partnership in all that they do.
