City pool opens in 10 days

It was summer 1984.

Pop star Prince released Purple Rain, the album which would launch him to superstardom.

Struggling carmaker John De Lorean, famous for designing the “space-age” car featured in Back to the Future, was found not guilty on eight counts of possessing and distributing cocaine.

And the temperature in Weatherford, Texas, soared to 114 degrees, officially marking the hottest day on record.

This summer probably won’t be that hot, but just in case, the City of Weatherford’s newly-renovated Cherry Park Pool is on schedule to reopen Saturday, May 24.

Weatherford Director of Parks and Recreation Kathy Mosby is excited to present bathhouse renovations.

“There are showers, a family changing room, and it’s all [American Disability Act] accessible,” she said. “And there is a new office for staff and a new ticket booth entry.”

Last year, the city installed shade structures, replaced lounge chairs and constructed a colorful water slide — a big hit with the kids.

Despite the new amenities, pool admission will remain the same, Mosby said. A day-long pool pass costs $2 for regular patrons. Admission for children less than 3 years old and anyone older than 65 is free.

The city’s street department is also finishing a resurfacing project on Lee Street, which runs west from South Main the pool’s front entrance.

On Tuesday, Street Superintendent Jim Collins and his 10-man crew paved the first strip since utility crews finished upgrading transmission lines in March. Before paving could commence, workmen needed to flatten a sizable crown in old Lee Street.

Collins is hustling and hoping for good weather so pool patrons can glide over new asphalt from South Main Street west to South Lamar Street by the time the pool opens.

This summer, two hours for public lap swimming are scheduled during Monday and Wednesday evenings from 7:45 to 9:45. Mosby expects the late hours will be especially popular with working families.

During the week, the pool is scheduled to open at 12:30 and close at 5 p.m., with hours from 12:30 to 7 p.m. on weekends.

Except for three days from May 27 until May 30, when some Weatherford ISD students are still scheduled to attend classes, the pool is expected to remain open every day until Aug. 1.
