Wall downed a second time

Phil Riddle

editor@weatherforddemocrat.com

The retaining wall on the northwest portion of the square has been knocked over by truck traffic — again.

According to Terry Hughes in the Transportation Department of the City of Weatherford, the most recent toppling of the wall is the second time since the edifice was erected as part of the city’s downtown beautification project.

“It’s been knocked down twice,” Hughes said. “The last time was three or four months ago.”

Hughes added neither incident has resulted in cost to the city.

“Both times, the truckers’ insurance took care of the damage,” he said.

According to the city, the downtown project began in October and is slated to include Americans with Disabilities Act compliant sidewalks and landings, period lighting fixtures, decorative traffic signals and signs, brick textured crosswalks and landscaping. And a white stone retaining wall on all four quadrants.

Hughes reported authorities are looking at ways to keep the soon-to-be-rebuilt wall intact.

“We’re looking at a different kind of curbing mechanism,” Hughes said.

The entire project is set for completion in September.
