Summer events at Weatherford Public Library

As temperatures rise, more and more Weatherford residents will be looking for summer entertainment that involves air conditioning. Throughout the month of June, Weatherford Public Library will be offering fun, educational events for all ages.

Monday, June 22, the Young Adult Summer Reading Club will include a program called “Pirates: History vs. Hollywood”. Starting at 2:30 p.m., “pirate” members of the stage combat choreography company “A Play on Swords” will show how ffilm portrayals of pirates clash with present day reality and historical accounts.

“The contrast between the renowned Jack Sparrow and the storied Captain Blood may seem vast, but when compared to the lives and exploits of real pirates such as Blackbeard and Black Bart, the chasm between fact and fiction seems insurmountable,” reads a press release. “However, while it is easy to say that Hollywood has gotten it all wrong, Sam and Jeff will share with teenagers what the big blockbusters of the last few years have gotten right.”

On Thursday, June 25 at 5 p.m., the club’s Summer Film Festival will present it’s third screening, although the film to be shown is not being released. Why?

“The integral dimension of this Film Festival is that the teens must vote for their movies!,” read the press release. “Ballots are available at the library and only those that garner the popular vote will be shown. The ballot counts take place on the Monday preceding a screening date. Everyone is welcome to attend, although parents are forewarned that these films are intended for older audiences and are usually rated PG-13.”

On Saturday, June 27 at 10:30 a.m., the Kids’ Summer Reading Club will feature the Sawyer Family Band.

“Combining their love of music with their love of books, the Sawyer Family Band will perform old favorites and bring to life the pictures and words of authors such as Laura Ingalls Wilder and Kadir Nelson,” said a press release.

Switching the focus toward participants physical selves, Monday June 29 will see the Library transform into a Yoga Center.

Exercise for Life is a mini-series within the overall Summer Reading Club programming for teenagres, designed to introduce individual exercise as an option for a healthy life.

“In Monday’s offering, the highlight will be on yoga as a practice that can be undertaken to both enhance physical health and mental wellness,” the press release said. “The program will be presented at 2:30pm by Kimberly Hardick of Aledo Yoga and Nia, who has generously donated her time to the Weatherford Public. The staff at Aledo Yoga and Nia is deeply passionate about the practice of yoga and work to bring their students to an awareness of themselves through laughter and respect. They have designed classes for both the casual practitioner and those eager to immerse themselves in the yoga lifestyle.”
