Police to ramp up enforcement during 7-day holiday period

The Weatherford Police Department is planning to increase patrols between June 30 and July 6, according to a statement released Friday.
Police hope stepping up traffic enforcement during holiday periods will reduce the number of drunken drivers on the road, and encourage speed and seat belt compliance.
Police are expected to use funds made available by the Texas Department of Transportation’s Traffic Safety Program to cover overtime salaries for officers and other expenses.
“Citizens can help us by wearing their seat belts, driving at posted speed limits, and always having a designated driver if alcohol is going to be a part of their holiday festivities,” stated Weatherford Police Captain David Smith. “We wish everybody a safe and happy Fourth of July.”
Recent speed surveys on Fort Worth Highway indicate 72 percent of drivers were abiding by posted speed limits.
On North Main Street, surveys showed 81 percent of drivers were abiding by posted speed limits.
Weatherford drivers were assessed a seat belt compliance rate of approximately 98 percent.
