Author and former Weatherford resident Wes Stein will make three Parker County stops this weekend on a tour promoting his new book “Son of the Sword; the River of Doors.”

Stein, a 1998 WHS graduate, will be at Lark Bookstore in Hudson Oaks at 11:30 a.m., as well as at the Springtown Public Library at 3:30 p.m., and is scheduled for an appearance on Linda Bagwell’s radio show (Title) at 10:15 a.m.

While promoting the book, Stein will also serve as an emissary for the American Cancer Society. Both his wife, Melissa, also of Weatherford, and 6-year-old daughter Chloe have a rare form of cancer called Von Hipple Lindau. The disease allows rampant growth of tumors, which, when removed, simply grow back.

“These events are designed to not only serve as a way to sell books and make fans,” Stein said in an e-mail, “but raise awareness for VHL, cancer and the thousands of families who struggle financially as well as physically in their bout with the disease.”

Stein, who now resides in Colorado, has decided to donate 10 percent of his book royalties to cancer research.

“Rather to invest the earnings from the book in our personal health, we chose to try to affect change on a larger scales,” Stein said.

He said VHL can be a financially crippling affliction.

“This is a very expensive disease requiring multiple scans, MRIs and CTs each year,” he said.

“Son of the Sword; the River of Doors,” is described as a fantasy for young adults which follows the journey of a young farm boy named Ellum, who travels the vast kingdom of Benbane to save his father from the gallows. Ellum, with the help of friends, reaches the land of the imposing ruler, the Jester, where he befriends a legendary swordsman named the Flyer.
