City, county clean up this weekend

Toss that junk!

Clean Up Day has become a biannual tradition in Weatherford and Parker County, and Saturday presents another opportunity for locals to toss their trash.

Weatherford residents can bring brush, leaves, grass, bagged garbage, furniture, appliances, metal, oil and oil filters, wood, sheet rock and paneling to the First Monday Trade Days grounds between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m.

Proof of residency, such as a utility bill or photo identification, will be required.

Disposal is free, and Sanitation Superintendent Steve Bates said a few prison inmates and about 20 city employees will help citizens unload the unwanted items.

“The city clean-up helps clean our community and gives everybody a chance to get rid of things that build up around the house,” Bates said.

He estimated about 700 residents to participate this year.

“At first there will be a little line, but it should taper off around 10 or 11, and then it will go pretty fast,” he said, drawing on his 20 years of experience with the clean-up event.

Parker County will open bulk collection sites on Saturday as well.

Precinct 1 will collect items at 3000 Veal Station Road in Weatherford. Items from Precinct 2 will be taken at 3033 FM Road in Weatherford. Precinct 3 residents may bring their trash to 1111 FM Road 1189 in Weatherford, and Precinct 4 residents will go to 1320 Airport Road in Aledo.

Some items will not be accepted by any collection sites. These include shingles, bricks, dirt, concrete, tires, paint, hazardous materials, chemicals, liquids and batteries.

City workers ask residents to separate metals and trash from wood or yard refuse before hauling the items to the sites.
