PASTOR POPHIN: New year, new focus, new hope

By TOMMY POPHIN

Beulah Baptist Church pastor

I know, New Year’s Day is over, and we are already five days into 2014. If you are like me, you spent several weeks thinking about what kind of resolution you were going to make for the new year.

Whether it be health, family or career, we all seem to desire some kind of change. Personally, I am starting my first new year with the church I am pastoring. I am full of, what I believe, are God-given dreams and visions of what He will do through our congregation. It’s exciting to think of what God can do in a year’s time.

In the first section of the Old Testament, there are five books called “The Pentateuch,” which are the books of the law. Within this section of scripture, we find “The Ten Commandments,” which are the laws concerning how we are to act towards God and one another.

As you read the various laws and regulations within these five books, you will find that they cover every aspect of life. As we read the law, we get the sense that the law was given in order to limit our life. As you take a closer look, you will find that the law was written to raise our lives back to the level which God originally intended.

In Leviticus 25, we find a section of the scripture that talks about a time of liberty, restoration and rest for God’s chosen people. Verse 10 states, “Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants. It shall be a jubilee for you; each of you is to return to your family property and to your own clan.” In the midst of oppression, God gave a command concerning freedom, He called it “jubilee.”
