Weatherford Firefighters Association to support breast cancer

ALEDO —

Weatherford firefighters and police officers help the public in times of need. Now it’s the public’s turn to help.

Members of the Weatherford Firefighters Association, a voluntary organization comprised of Weatherford firefighters, will be selling pink T-shirts to show support for police and fire personnel whose wives have been directly affected by breast cancer. Association President Jake VanZant said a Weatherford firefighter and a Weatherford police officer have wives who are both dealing with breast cancer issues right now.

The association has sold the shirts in the past with the proceeds going toward the Susan G. Komen Foundation. With breast cancer striking so close to home, the association has decided to donate all proceeds to those affected within the fire and police departments as well as the Careity Foundation, which offers free mammograms to Parker County women in need of them.

“We thought it was important to take care of local guys and their families,” VanZant said. “Medical bills aren’t cheap.”

Shirts can be pre-ordered now through Friday and are $20 each for sizes small through extra large. Extended sizes are $22.

To pre-order a shirt, call Katrina at 817-598-4280 or come by the station at 202 W. Oak (behind city hall). Payment is by cash or check only. Preordered shirts will be available Oct. 1.

VanZant said the number of preordered shirts will determine how many shirts are ordered and ultimately sold throughout the month of October. VanZant said the association will also be purchasing magnets for the side of the trucks promoting the T-shirt sale.
