Preparing the way …

First in a series of weekly December articles.

By PASTOR TOMMY POPHIN

It’s Dec. 1, people are getting ready. There are two events in life during which people have a tendency to spend much time preparing: The holidays and the birth of a child.

Christmas is the culmination of both. When Jesus came, He came as a fulfillment of a 4000 year old promise.  The promise was given to Satan right after Adam and Eve gave in to his temptation to eat of “the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.”  God promised Satan that Jesus would someday stomp on and “crush his head” (Genesis 3:15) rendering him powerless to even tempt humankind again.

Many Christian churches are observing the month of December as “the advent” of Christ.  Advent literally means “the arrival of a notable person.” Our minds go to a stable found in a manger in Bethlehem 2000 years ago when “the Word (Jesus) became flesh (John 1:14). That moment in history was so significant that it has even divided time. The years BC (before Christ) became the years AD (Agnus Dei, Day of the Lord) and the world has never been the same since.

Prophets throughout all time wrote of that day. The prophet Isaiah stated, “Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. … The glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all flesh shall see it together; for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.” (Isaiah 40:3 & 5)

During this season of the year, Christians do not only celebrate the original Advent, they also are preparing for a Second Advent, a future event that causes our eyes to look forward. John the Baptist, the forerunner of Christ cried out in the wilderness telling us to “Repent (immediately) for the kingdom of heaven is near.” Are you ready for Christ’s coming?

Tommy Pophin is the pastor of Beulah Baptist Church, located in Millsap on the corner of Fox Road and Beulah Road. He encourages you to spend every Sunday of this Advent Season in the church of your choice. Beulah Baptist meets Sundays at 11 a.m. and invites you to participate in worship with us.

In June, there were seven students who explored the flora and fauna of the rainforest through music at The Burch School of Music. Each child made his or her own rain stick, along with other crafts and art work. For two hours each day for five days, students explored a different level of the rainforest, starting with the emergent layer at the top, moving through the canopy, the understory, the forest floor and the rivers. They let bats fly (black balloons) and were eaten by a boa constrictor. On the last day they dressed as natives and drummed together.
