Heater drive to benefit seniors in need

PARKER COUNTY — With the cooler weather apparently having settled in, space heaters are a welcome relief for many. With the tough economy, however, many senior citizens may have to decide between heat or food and medication.

The Weatherford Police Department, the WPD’s Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni Association volunteers and Weatherford High School’s cosmetology department combined to make the decision on whether or not to have a heater a little easier Saturday by having a Haircuts for Heaters drive at Lowe’s. The premise was simple: donate a new space heater to the drive and get a free haircut or a cash donation could be made for a haircut as well.

All heaters will go to Parker County senior citizens in need of them.

Danna Farmer, cosmetology instructor at WHS, said she began coming up with the idea last year and contacted Alecia Durham at the police department.

For those that did not have time to stay for a haircut, a certificate was offered so they could go by the school and receive the haircut at another time.  That worked out great for Skylar Smith, a homeschooled student whose family was shopping at Lowe’s.

Because of a technical glitch with an outlet outside the store, the cosmetology students were forced to move to another area. With the Smith family needing to move on, the certificate was presented.

“I’m outta here,” Smith said.

For those that were unable to make it to the drive but still wish to help, the drive will continue Saturday, Nov. 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at both the Weatherford and Hudson Oaks Walmarts and at Lowe’s Home Improvement in Weatherford.  New electric heater donations or monetary contributions may also be dropped off at Weatherford Police Department located at 801 Santa Fe Drive or at the Parker County Senior Center located at 1225 Holland Lake Drive.
