Weatherford last week was named by a home security company among the top 50 safest cities in Texas with a population over 20,000.
According to a SafeWise ranking of mid- to large-size cities in Texas, Weatherford joined the ranks of several other Metroplex area cities recognized as a low crime area.
With Colleyville, Little Elm, Flower Mound, Sachse, Corinth, Keller, and University Park taking seven of the top ten safest city spots, Weatherford came in at No. 41, just below Carollton.
“Adding to its reputation as a premier place to relocate is its low incidents [sic] of crime,” SafeWise wrote of Weatherford. “According to the FBI’s Crime Report, no murders, 11 robberies and 20 motor vehicle thefts were reported to law enforcement in 2011.”
Weatherford’s top public safety official, Weatherford Police Chief Mike Manning, said the police department is proud of the accomplishment.
“I guess I’d have to give a lot of credit to the officers for being visible,” Manning said, adding that he’d also give credit to detectives for doing follow up and the citizen’s police academy association for helping the police department be visible.
“I’m convinced the more visibility and officer presence, the lower the crime rate,” Manning said.
Manning also credited the area’s stable population who have lived in the area for a while and take pride in their city.
