The coming King

By PASTOR TOMMY POPHIN

On July 22, a prince was born. He is third in line to the throne of Great Britain. His name is George Louis Alexander Mountbatten-Windsor and will carry the title of Prince George of Cambridge.

All of England followed the announcement of the birth with bated breath.

Throughout the ages, there have been several royal birth announcements. Many questions are raised along with the announcements: “Will this royal birth truly result in a king who will take the throne?” “What kind of king will he be?” or “When this prince is old enough to be king, will a king even be needed?”

With the hope of these newborn royals, there seems to be much uncertainty.

Throughout the Old Testament, there are many prophecies concerning a coming King who will sit upon the Throne of David and rule over the House of Jacob forever. Not only do we know that He is coming, but we also know the details of His kingship. For example, in Psalm 72:8-11, the prophecy states, “He shall have dominion from sea to sea, and from the River to the ends of the earth … The kings of Tarshish and of the isles will bring presents; the kings of Sheba and Seba will offer gifts. Yes, all kings shall fall down before Him; all nations shall serve Him.”

We find in the birth account of Jesus (Matthew 2:1-2) these words: “After Jesus was born in Bethlehem … during the time of King Herod, Magi … came to Jerusalem and asked, ‘Where is the One who has been born king of the Jews? We saw His star … and have come to worship Him.”

As we enter this Advent season, we celebrate both the birth of a King and His coming return to rule over all the earth. We find in Philippians 2:9-11 these words: “Therefore God exalted Him to the highest place and gave Him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
