Weatherford Chamber of Commerce members are eligible for more benefits than they might be aware of.
The chamber hosted a Chamber 101 event Monday where members were able to learn more about what is offered and how to take advantage of it.
Moderator Peggy Hutton said many members don’t take advantage of what is offered.
“We tell our members that business is transacted at all events, so they need to attend as many as they can,” Hutton said. “You get out of your Chamber membership what you put into it.”
Hutton recommended attending ribbon cuttings, which is a great way to get your business in front of people who are new to the community. A weekly e-chat newsletter is sent out by the chamber with upcoming events listed., but many people don’t look at the e-mail, Hutton said.
Each of the chamber committees was explained. Dennis Clayton, chair of the Business Retention and Expansion committee says his committee focuses on existing businesses.
“Everyone talks about new businesses, but existing businesses is the foundation of the economy,” Clayton, executive director of the Weatherford Economic Development Authority, said. “We share the interests of existing businesses.”
Clayton said the committee visits a few businesses every month during its meeting the first Monday of every month.
Other committees include the chamber Ambassadors, business development and tourism. Hutton said there are many ways to get involved with the chamber, even if you’re not the committee type.
Hutton said placing events on the chamber website’s calendar of events is a good way to get your name out there. The service is free and it is sent out to members of the local media.
Taking part in chamber events, such as Breakfast Before Business, which takes place the second Friday of every month, is another way of getting a business name out there. Becoming a vendor at a chamber event, such as the Parker County Peach Festival in July or Christmas on the Square in December, will also bring people around to your business.
