Parker County Retired Teachers visit the past

Parker County Retired Teachers met at Central Christian Church’s Cuppett Hall on Jan. 7 to celebrate the new year with a look at the past, presented by special guest speaker Dr. Harold Lawrence, former English professor at Weatherford College.

In 2001, Lawrence, with his wife, Elizabeth, opened the Museum of the Americas. History of the native peoples of the Americas sprang to life as Dr. Lawrence told of the museum’s exhibits and 2,500-3,000 pieces of indigenous artifacts, crafts and folk art on display. Not only are permanent exhibits available to educate the public, but this teaching museum also makes available a 4,000-volume library.

The goal of the museum is to nurture understanding and appreciation for diverse populations, their history, the beauty of their creative processes, and their struggles. Free to the public, hours for the museum and gift shop, located at 216 Fort Worth Highway, across from the public market in Weatherford, are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Tours are available by reservation. The museum is closed in January and August.

For more information about the Museum of the Americas and upcoming events, call (817) 341-8668, or go to www.museumoftheamericas.com. Sponsoring this enlightening program were the Awards and Scrapbook/Historian committees.

Catering and assisting the food service committee in serving this month was PCRTA’s own Roger Grizzard, of Pizza Place, who featured his Italian specialty of lasagna with salad and garlic bread. Prior to lunch, President Louretta Evans inspired members with these words of wisdom: “Write it on your heart that today is the best day of the year.”

Members continue to support the state book project fund, adding dollars for purchasing 500 books by May for children in the community.  A new feature for 2014 will be President Evans’ brag jar to which members contribute a dollar for the “right to brag,” funds which will be added to the book project account.
