DAR hosts awards, scholarships luncheon

On March 26, the Weatherford Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution hosted their annual luncheon at North Side Baptist Church in Weatherford.

The Good Citizen Award recognizes a graduating senior from each of the seven high schools in Parker County for their outstanding character, leadership, service, and patriotism demonstrated in their homes, schools and communities. Each student was selected by their high school to receive this honor.

This year’s recipients were Rachael Larson, Aledo; Dallin Robertson, Brock; Chase Dodson, Millsap; Abby Long, Peaster; Trevor Simpson, Poolville; Madison Whitehead, Springtown; and Hannah Blaisdell, Weatherford.

Since 1924, the Weatherford DAR chapter has provided a scholarship annually to a deserving young woman or man to further their educational goals. This year, the chapter received 21 applications from across the county from very deserving graduating seniors. The scholarship committee, after much deliberation, awarded four scholarships.

The first recipient was Tiffany Sinclair, of Weatherford High School, the daughter of James and Trisha Sinclair of Weatherford. She plans to study Graphic Design.

Next was Hana Miller, daughter of Hank and Vikki Miller, also of Weatherford. She attends Peaster High School and plans to major in Nursing.

Santana Lanier of Poolville was the next scholarship recipient. The daughter of Tara Neel and Chad Lanier, her goal is to obtain a degree in Criminal Justice and, possibly, attend the police academy.

The fourth scholarship was awarded to Rachael Larson, daughter of Ron and Sylvia Larson, of Aledo.  Her plans are to take her basic course studies at Weatherford College before transferring to Baylor University, where she will major in Religious Studies.

DAR is a women’s organization with chapters in every state of the union and many foreign countries.  For membership, any woman 18-years of age or older – regardless of race, religion or ethnic background – who can prove lineal descent from a Patriot of the American Revolution,  is eligible for membership.

If you are interested in learning more about DAR go to www.dar.org or attend the next meeting Tuesday, April 23, 2 p.m. at North Side Baptist Church’s fellowship hall. Janiece Oliver, a DAR member, will be presenting a program entitled, “From Plowshares to Long Rifles – Her Families History in the Revolutionary War.”
