Military soldier sends love from Afghanistan on Father’s Day

By SGT. JESSI MCCORMICK

TARIN KOT, AFGHANISTAN – Millsap native Sgt. James Spurlock, an infantryman with 56th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Texas Army National Guard, is currently serving with Combined Team Uruzgan at Multinational Base - Tarin Kot, Afghanistan, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Spurlock, on his second deployment, arrived in the theater in November 2012. He has served in the military for six years.

Many soldiers have been away from their families for important holidays, such as Father’s Day. On Dec. 17, 2012, Spurlock became a father after the birth of his first son, Nolan, who was named after former pitcher and current President of the Texas Rangers, Nolan Ryan. Spurlock had a few words for his son.

“When you were born, I was in Afghanistan, and I got to come home for two weeks to see you after you were born,” Spurlock said. “It was the best two weeks of my life, and when Daddy comes home, we’re going to a ballgame! I love you.”

Spurlock is currently working with a Security Force Assistance Team to advise Afghan National Police officers. He is scheduled to return to his unit in Grand Prairie, Texas, in the next few months.
